Abstract Current practices in employee climate and culture surveying in Australia were researched. Semi-structured interviews with 56 medium and large organisations were conducted, coded, and analysed across the major dimensions of survey content and logistics, reporting the results, and using the results. Results indicate large gaps between much employee surveying and advice given in the literature. Developmental consultation was found to rarely include a full range of relevant stakeholders, and pre-survey communications are rarely prepared according to strategy. Action planning to make changes suggested by the survey results is often of variable quality in different parts of the same organisation, thus risking the reputation of the survey. Good practice, however, results in response rates exceeding 90% either on paper or online. More organisations use consultants (86%) than conduct surveys in-house (14%), and a large number of smaller consultants supplement the small number of larger survey suppliers. The strength of the support given to the survey project by the Chief Executive Officer or their equivalent, as expected, has a significant impact on the success of the survey. While the trend is organisations moving toward online survey delivery, the technology does not suit all organisations. A significant number of organisations (11%) have returned to paper distribution at least temporarily after trialling online distribution. At least one organisation demonstrated that longitudinal tracking of individual employee attitudes is possible in some circumstances. A call for continued research to improve the usefulness of surveys and reports on a number of dimensions is made.
